BLDC motor drive: choosing the components

A three-phase BLDC motor drive needs six functional blocks: a control MCU, rotor position sensing, phase current sensing, gate drive, a power switching stage, and a bias and protection supply. This guide shows which J.P. Electronics manufacturer lines serve each block, and the design questions that decide each choice.

Which of our lines serves each block?

How do I choose a current sensor for field-oriented control?

Field-oriented control samples phase current inside the PWM window, so the sensor’s bandwidth and delay matter more than its headline accuracy. At higher currents, or wherever the control ground is not the power ground, an isolated or coreless sensor removes the shunt’s dissipation and the level-shifting problem.

What changes at higher bus voltages?

Isolation stops being optional. Gate drive, current sensing and the bias supply all cross an isolation barrier, creepage and clearance start driving the layout, and the switch choice between silicon, SiC and GaN becomes a thermal and cost question rather than an electrical one.
